Services : Pet Weight Loss Support
At College Heights Vet, we understand that meeting your pet’s nutritional needs can sometimes be difficult. We encourage you to discuss this with Dr Bonafine and our staff, so that we can offer you as much support and knowledge as we can to keep your pet on the path to good health.
How can you tell if your pet is overweight? Feel around the ribs and spine. You should be able to locate both, with only a thin layer of fat separating the skin from the bones. If you can’t find the ribs, spine and waist, your pet is likely storing too much body fat.
Sometimes being overweight is not just a matter of eating too much or not exercising enough. We will also check for:
- Low thyroid level
- Hormonal imbalances, such as Cushing’s disease
Just like for people, obesity in pets can have potentially devastating consequences:
- Trouble breathing
- Pancreatitis
- Diabetes
- Orthopedic concerns
- Compromised immune system
- Heart problems
- High blood pressure
- Mammary tumors (particularly in unspayed females)
- Skin conditions
- Greater risk for heat stroke
- Reduction in life span
