It is a painless, non-invasive, diagnostic procedure based on high frequency sound waves.

These waves bounce back on certain tissues and are absorbed by others. The reflected waves are measured by the ultrasound machine, which transforms them into an image in real time, meaning that heartbeat, blood flow and intestinal movements can be observed as they are happening.

As a general rule, animals do not need to be sedated to have this procedure done. Hair needs to be trimmed because it interferes with the sound waves and alters the results. Other preparations might be needed for the exam. The doctor or the Registered Animal Health Technologist will inform you prior to it.

Diagnostic ultrasound can be used to examine the liver, gall bladder, spleen, kidneys, bladder, prostate, uterus, ovaries, adrenal glands, stomach, and intestines. This means it can help us observe the cause of common pet health issues.
